Welcome to the inaugural issue of Athens Weekly. Two weeks ago, Athens 2.0.0 with real time collaboration officially entered beta. To commemorate this, we had a launch party. In the two weeks since then, we have had numerous bug fixes as well as a few nifty little features being added across 3 additional releases.
Whats new?
Let's start off with what's new, the headlining feature is the first implementation of templates in Athens. Thanks Filipe!
At the moment the implementation is fairly bare bones and is not optimized to a lot of workflows but this is sure to improve in the future. The current approach employed is to search the entire database, similar to how block references work, and upon selecting a block, paste sub blocks belonging to the block.
To efficiently use this feature, Yifan from the discord shared her workflow where she adds a prefix to all template blocks. This is a great way to navigate the limitations of the current implementation and makes it easier to use templates while reducing the likelihood of them accidentally appearing in block reference search.
On the side, we've now got a keyboard shortcut to toggle between light and dark mode. Nifty for those long writing sessions!
Simply use the shortcut option/alt + t
to bring a treat to your eyes 😉
Tips and Tricks!
A handy trick for today: Find and replace across your entire graph using unlinked references.
This is incredibly useful for quick operations throughout the graph. This can be used for all sorts of workflows from small things from accounting for Facebook becoming Meta to even batch changing web links.
Here's how
Identify the term you want to replace
Create a page using search (`cmd-k`) titled the term you just identified
Open unlinked references
Click "link all" or select specific terms you want to replace with the new term
Rename the page to what you want to replace the initial term with
Delete the page
Voilà! You've replaced all instances of the term!
